About this tool
Make a photo or screenshot smaller so it uploads faster, fits an email, or loads quickly on a web page. Set a width and height in pixels (or a percentage), pick a format and quality, and check the resulting file size before you download.
Everything runs in your browser. Your image is decoded and re-encoded on your device and is never uploaded.
How to get a smaller file
- Reduce the pixel dimensions first. Halving the width and height cuts the number of pixels to a quarter, which usually shrinks the file the most.
- Choose JPEG or WebP for photos and lower the quality. A value around 75-85 is usually hard to tell from the original.
- Keep PNG for screenshots, logos and diagrams with flat colors or text. PNG is lossless, so the quality setting does not apply.
Things to know
- Metadata is removed. The image is redrawn and saved again, so EXIF data such as camera model and GPS location is not kept. That is useful for privacy, but it also means copyright fields are dropped.
- JPEG has no transparency. Transparent areas are filled with white when you choose JPEG. Use PNG or WebP to keep them.
- Enlarging does not add detail. Scaling above 100% makes the image bigger but blurrier.
- Animated GIFs keep only their first frame. HEIC photos can only be opened if your browser can display them. SVG files are not supported.
- WebP output depends on your browser. If it cannot encode WebP, the file is saved as PNG instead and the note above the buttons says so.
- Browsers limit the size of the working canvas, so the tool allows up to 16,384 pixels on a side and 100 million pixels in total.
FAQ
Q. Is my image uploaded anywhere?
A. No. The image never leaves your browser. You can check this in your browser's network panel.
Q. Why is the file larger than my original?
A. This happens when you save a photo as PNG, or use a very high quality setting. Choose JPEG or WebP and lower the quality or the dimensions.
Q. Can I crop the image?
A. This tool only resizes. The Japanese site has an image cropper that we plan to translate.
