About this tool
Open any image, click a pixel and get its color as HEX, RGB and HSL, ready to paste into CSS, design tools or documents. It also finds the dominant colors of the image, which is handy for building a palette from a photo or a logo.
Everything runs in your browser. Your image is never uploaded.
How it works
- The picker reads the pixel at the original image resolution, even when the image is shown smaller on the page, so the value is exact for that pixel. The small magnifier shows the 11 × 11 pixels around the pointer.
- Screenshots and photos contain noise and gradients, so neighboring pixels often differ by a few values. Click a few spots, or use the dominant colors, when you need the "overall" color of an area.
- Colors are read as sRGB, as the browser draws them. An image with another color profile (such as Display P3) is converted by the browser first, so the numbers can differ slightly from what a design tool shows for the file.
- For pixels that are partly transparent, the color shown is the color without the transparency, and the alpha value is listed separately.
- Dominant colors use the median cut method on a color histogram of a reduced copy of the image (at most about 40,000 pixels). Mostly transparent pixels are ignored. The percentages are approximate, and each color is the average of the pixels grouped into it.
- The contrast figures are the WCAG ratio against white and black text. 4.5:1 is the minimum for normal text, and 3:1 for large text.
- "Pick from screen" appears in browsers that support the EyeDropper API (Chrome and Edge). It can read any pixel on your screen, not only the image.
FAQ
Q. Why is the color a little different from my design tool?
A. Usually color management or image compression. JPEG changes pixel values slightly, and a file with an embedded profile can be converted. For exact brand colors, read the value from the source file.
Q. Can I pick from a page that is open in another tab?
A. Use "Pick from screen" if your browser shows it. Otherwise take a screenshot, then paste it here with Ctrl+V.
