About this tool

Read a QR code from a photo, a screenshot or your camera, and see exactly what it contains before you act on it. That is useful for checking where a code leads, copying a Wi-Fi password, or reading a code on a computer screen that your phone cannot scan.

Everything runs in your browser. Images and camera video are never uploaded or recorded.

How it works

  • Decoding uses the open-source jsQR library. It reads standard QR codes, including inverted (light on dark) ones. It does not read barcodes, Data Matrix or Micro QR codes, and it reads one code at a time.
  • For images, the code should be reasonably sharp and fill a good part of the picture. Large photos are checked at a reduced size first and then at full size.
  • The camera needs your permission and a secure (https) page. The video stays on your device, and the camera stops as soon as a code is found or you press Stop.
  • The text is shown as is. Wi-Fi codes are split into network name, password and security type, and email, phone, SMS and location codes are labeled. Links get an "Open link" button only for http and https addresses.
  • Treat what you scan with care. A QR code can hold any text, including a link to a phishing site, so read the address before you open it, and do not enter passwords on a page you reached only through a code you do not trust.

FAQ

Q. "No QR code found" but I can see one.

A. Crop closer to the code, avoid glare and motion blur, and make sure the white border around the code is visible. Try a higher-resolution picture. A code that is damaged or very dense may not be readable.

Q. Can I make a QR code?

A. Yes, with the QR Code Generator.
