CSV Editor
About this tool
Open a CSV or TSV file, fix it in an editable table, and save it again. You can filter rows with up to three conditions, sort by up to three columns, rename, add, move and delete columns, and clean up spaces, empty rows and duplicates, then copy the result or download it with the encoding you need.
Everything runs in your browser. Your data is never sent to a server.
How it works
- The input is read as CSV (RFC 4180): values in double quotes can contain the separator, doubled quotes and line breaks. Empty lines are dropped, and rows shorter than the widest row are padded with empty cells.
- Filter conditions apply to the column you pick, or to "(any column)". With "any column", contains, equals, starts with, ends with and the number tests are true when some column matches, and the negative conditions (does not contain, does not equal) are true only when no column matches. Text tests ignore case unless you tick Match case. Number tests read plain decimals such as
12,-3.5or1e3; a cell that is not a number never matches. - Sort: text sorting ignores case and compares character codes, not a language's alphabet, so accented letters come after Z. Number sorting puts cells that are not numbers last, whatever the direction. Rows that tie keep their original order.
- The result, the download and the copy always show the rows that pass the filter, in the sorted order. The table shows the first 500 of them to stay fast; edits, sorting and the result cover all rows. Edit a cell by typing in it. After you leave the cell, rows are filtered and sorted again.
- Column names in the header row can be edited. Without a header row, columns are shown as Column 1, Column 2 and so on, and no header is written. Turning "First row is a header" on or off keeps your edits and moves the first row between header and data.
- Deleting, adding and moving columns or rows and the clean-up buttons can be undone with Undo (the last 10 steps, for tables up to 300,000 cells). Reload from the box above starts again from the text in the input box.
- Files are read as UTF-8; a byte order mark is removed. If characters look broken, the file is probably in another encoding such as Windows-1252: save it as "CSV UTF-8" from your spreadsheet first. Tables are limited to 200 columns.
- For Excel on Windows, choose UTF-8 with byte order mark (or UTF-16 LE) so non-English characters show correctly when you double-click the file.
FAQ
Q. Can I edit a value that contains a line break?
A. Yes. Each cell is a small text box that can hold several lines.
Q. Why did my filter hide rows I edited?
A. After you leave a cell, the filter is applied again. If the new value no longer matches, the row drops out of the table and the result. Clear the filter to see every row.
Q. How do I swap two columns?
A. Use the left and right arrow buttons above a column to move it one step at a time. They work with the keyboard too.
