WebM to WAV Converter

About this tool

Convert a WebM audio recording to an uncompressed WAV file, right in your browser. WebM audio comes from screen and voice recorders, browser tools and some messaging apps, and many editors and speech-to-text tools want WAV instead. The same converter also reads MP3, Ogg, M4A and other audio your browser can play.

Your file is decoded and converted on your computer. It is never uploaded.

How it works

  • The browser decodes the file, and the tool writes the samples as standard PCM WAV (a RIFF/WAVE file) at the sample rate, channel count and bit depth you choose. Nothing is compressed, so the file is much larger than the original: about 10 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz stereo at 16 bits.
  • WebM audio is normally Opus, which always plays back at 48,000 Hz, so 48,000 Hz keeps the audio as it is. Choosing a lower rate resamples it, which is useful for speech tools (16,000 Hz) but removes high frequencies.
  • Mix down to mono averages the left and right channels. Stereo files keep both channels by default.
  • 24-bit PCM makes the file one and a half times as large as 16-bit. It cannot add detail that the compressed source never had, so use it only if your editing software asks for it.
  • Only files your browser can decode are supported. A video file with an audio track is fine in most browsers: the audio is extracted and the picture is ignored.
  • WAV files are limited to about 4 GB, and the whole decoded sound is held in memory while converting. Recordings longer than roughly an hour may fail; the tool tells you if the result would be too large.

FAQ

Q. Why is the WAV so much bigger?

A. WebM audio is compressed. WAV stores every sample, so a 1 MB recording often becomes 10 to 20 MB.

Q. Does converting to WAV improve the quality?

A. No. It cannot restore detail lost when the recording was compressed. It only makes the audio usable in tools that do not accept WebM.

Q. The file will not convert. What can I do?

A. The browser may not support the codec, or the file may be damaged. Try another browser such as a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or check that the file plays in the player below.
