Transpose Rows & Columns

About this tool

Swap the rows and columns of a table, turn a column of values into a single row (or the other way around), and change the separator on the way. It is handy when a list in a spreadsheet needs to become a comma-separated line for a query, or a header row needs to become a column.

Everything runs in your browser. Your data is never sent to a server.

How it works

  • Transpose reads the input as a table (tab, comma, semicolon, pipe or space separated), then writes row 1 as column 1, row 2 as column 2, and so on. Rows of different lengths are padded with empty cells so the result is a full rectangle.
  • Join lines puts every line into one line, separated by the output separator. Split one line does the reverse: each item between separators becomes its own line.
  • The input is read as CSV: an item in double quotes may contain the separator, a doubled "" for a quote, and even line breaks, and none of them split the item. The quotes are removed on reading and added again in the result only where needed (or always, or never, as you choose).
  • Detect automatically looks at the first non-empty line and picks whichever of tab, comma, semicolon or pipe appears most. A single column of text has no separator, so it is treated as one item per line.
  • Space as a separator splits on every single space; two spaces in a row create an empty item.

FAQ

Q. How do I turn a column from Excel into a comma-separated list?

A. Copy the column, paste it here, choose "Join lines into one line", set the output separator to Comma, and set quotes to None or Always 'single' for SQL.

Q. Does transposing keep my quotes and commas inside cells?

A. Yes. Cells that contain the separator, quotes or line breaks are read correctly and quoted again in the result when needed.

Q. What is the difference from the Lines to Columns tool?

A. Lines to Columns cuts one long list into several columns. This tool swaps the axes of a table you already have, or joins and splits a single list.
